What should you know about cradle cap eyelids?

Infantile seborrheic dermatitis can affect the eyebrows and skin around the eyelids as well as the scalp. It may cause fine flakes, yellowish scale, mild redness, or a slightly greasy surface. The eyelid margin itself is delicate, and a similar-looking rash can have other causes, including irritation or inflammation of the eyelids. Cradle cap should not cause swelling of the eye, marked pain, or changes in vision.

Wash your hands first. Use a clean, damp, lukewarm cloth to wipe the surrounding skin gently, moving away from the eye rather than rubbing across it. A clinician may suggest a plain emollient for nearby skin, but do not put it on the eyelid margin or into the eye unless directed. Never pick scale from lashes. Avoid fragranced wipes, essential oils, and medicated creams near the eyes without professional guidance. If a treatment is needed, a clinician can select one that is suitable for this sensitive location.

Seek medical advice promptly if the eyelid becomes very swollen, painful, hot, crusted, or difficult to open, or if there is pus-like discharge. Get urgent help for light sensitivity, a cloudy-looking eye, changes in vision, or a baby who appears seriously unwell. Arrange a review when the rash is persistent, spreading, or not clearly limited to the surrounding skin.
