What should you know about cradle cap come back?

Cradle cap often improves in stages rather than disappearing after one wash. New scales can form while the baby’s oil glands remain active, and the normal yeast on skin may continue to contribute. A return of mild flakes does not mean you caused a problem or failed to clean the scalp. The pattern may also be different if redness, itch, or rash on the face and body develops, so a clinician may need to reconsider the diagnosis.

Restart gentle care: soften the scales with a bland emollient, wash with mild baby shampoo, and use a soft brush only for flakes that release easily. Avoid daily vigorous scrubbing, fingernails, fragranced oils, and picking. Keep a note of products used and whether the skin is red or sore. If recurrences are frequent or difficult to manage, ask about Emollient Therapy or Topical Antifungal Treatment rather than choosing a medicine independently.

Book a review if each recurrence becomes more inflamed, spreads away from the scalp, causes marked itching, or fails to settle with the advised routine. Seek prompt help for swelling, pain, bleeding, oozing, pus, fever, or a baby who seems unwell. These features may indicate irritation, infection, or another skin condition.
