What should you know about cradle cap causes?

Cradle cap, or infantile seborrheic dermatitis, develops when oil from the scalp combines with shed skin cells. A type of yeast that normally lives on skin may also contribute to the inflammation. Babies’ oil glands are influenced by hormones passed from the mother before birth, and this activity settles as they grow. The result can be sticky scales, flaking, and mild redness around the scalp or other oily areas.

There is no need to scrub harder or wash repeatedly to prevent cradle cap. Use gentle shampoo and loosen only softened scales. Avoid scratching, tight hats, fragranced products, and home remedies that may sting. If the rash is extensive or continues despite gentle care, a clinician can decide whether an emollient approach or Topical Antifungal Treatment is appropriate. Do not apply a medicated product without advice about the baby’s age and the area involved.

Seek medical advice when the skin is painful, increasingly red, swollen, bleeding, oozing, or covered with pus. Arrange a review if the rash affects the face or body, interferes with feeding or sleep, or does not resemble the usual mild scalp scaling. Prompt assessment is needed if your baby has a fever or seems unusually sleepy or unwell.
