Cradle cap at 2 months: what parents should know

Cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, can appear as yellow, white, or brownish greasy scales on the scalp. Some babies have mild redness, while others mainly have flakes. It is not caused by poor hygiene and is not something a parent has passed to the baby. Scales can sometimes extend to the eyebrows or behind the ears. A two-month-old has delicate skin, so forceful scraping can create soreness and small breaks.

Wash the scalp with a mild baby cleanser, rinse well, and pat dry. Before washing, a small amount of a plain emollient may help loosen scales; leave it briefly, then use a soft brush or washcloth to lift only the flakes that release easily. Never pick or pull attached scale. Keep oils away from the eyes, and wash them out rather than leaving a thick layer on the scalp. If home care is not enough, a clinician can advise whether a medicated product is appropriate for this age.

Contact a clinician if the scalp is very red, swollen, wet, bleeding, painful, or develops crusting or pus. Ask for an assessment if the rash spreads widely, the baby seems unwell, or scales do not settle with gentle care. A different infant rash can look similar, and treatment should be chosen with the baby's age and skin condition in mind.
