Cracked heels and a pumice stone: what to know

Short answer
A pumice stone may gently smooth thick, intact heel skin, but do not use it on an open, bleeding or painful crack because abrasion can worsen the wound.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Safe target
- Thick, intact skin only
- Stop if
- The area feels tender, raw or starts bleeding
What pumice can and cannot do
Pumice removes some surface scale; it does not replace moisture or treat an underlying skin condition. A heel fissure can be surrounded by hard skin, but scrubbing over the split may enlarge it, cause bleeding and introduce irritation. Itch, peeling or scale on the sole and between the toes may suggest Athlete's Foot, which needs a different approach.
The rough surface described as [Dry Skin](/symptoms/dry-skin/) may improve with moisturising. [Cracked Skin](/symptoms/skin-cracking/) should be protected rather than aggressively sanded.
If you choose to use one
Use a clean, personal pumice stone only on softened, intact skin after a brief lukewarm soak. Make a few light passes over thick areas, stop before tenderness and rinse the stone afterward. Never share it or use it on an open fissure. Pat dry, then apply a rich moisturiser; [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) helps address the dryness that creates roughness. Avoid blades, metal rasps and vigorous scrubbing. If cracks recur, a clinician can recommend a safer plan.
When to seek care
Stop abrasion and seek advice if the heel bleeds, becomes more painful, warm, swollen or red, or develops discharge. Arrange assessment when walking is difficult, the fissure does not close or scale keeps returning. People with diabetes, reduced sensation or circulation problems should ask a clinician before using a pumice stone on their feet.
Questions for your doctor
Is the thick skin safe to smooth, or is the fissure too open? Could Athlete's Foot or eczema be contributing? What moisturiser and foot-care tool suit my skin?

Questions people ask
Can a pumice stone close a heel crack?
No. It can reduce surface roughness, but healing depends on protecting the fissure and restoring moisture.
How often should I scrub a cracked heel?
Do not scrub an open or painful crack; ask for advice if thick surrounding skin keeps returning.
