Short answer

Cracked heels after pregnancy are often related to dryness, pressure, and changed footwear or routines, but persistent splits should be assessed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be contributing

After pregnancy, sleep disruption, more time standing, household demands, and different shoes can change the pressure and friction placed on the feet. Frequent washing and dry indoor air can remove surface oils, leaving thick heel skin less flexible. Cracking may occur alongside general Dry Skin. It can also be accompanied by scaling or itching from Athlete's Foot, so the pattern on the soles and between the toes is useful to describe. Pregnancy-related changes do not explain every foot symptom, particularly when the skin is hot, swollen, or draining.

Gentle care at home

Rinse with lukewarm water, use a mild cleanser, and dry carefully. Apply a rich, fragrance-free moisturiser to the heels after washing and cover them with soft socks. Choose shoes with a stable heel and enough room for the toes; avoid rough straps that rub the back of the foot. Keep any open split clean and protected, and do not use a blade to remove thick skin. If breastfeeding or using medicines, tell the clinician so product choices can be tailored to you and your baby.

When to get checked

Book an appointment if the cracks persist, recur, bleed, or interfere with caring for your baby or walking. Seek prompt help if redness spreads, the area becomes hot or swollen, pus appears, or you feel feverish. Reduced sensation, diabetes, or poor circulation lowers the threshold for an early foot examination.

Questions people ask

Can postpartum routine changes affect cracked heels?

Yes. More standing, different shoes, frequent washing, and less time for regular skin care can all worsen dryness or friction.

Can I treat cracked heels while breastfeeding?

Ask a clinician or pharmacist to confirm a suitable product, especially if it could contact the baby's mouth or hands.
