Cracked foreskin and yeast infection: what to know

Yeast infection can present with redness, itching, soreness, swelling, or small fissures around the head of the penis and foreskin. Moisture trapped under the foreskin can encourage irritation. Friction, contact dermatitis, eczema, bacterial inflammation, sexually transmitted infections, and tight foreskin can cause similar changes, so a cracked foreskin does not identify the cause by itself.

A sexual partner may have vaginal thrush without either person having acquired it from the other. Repeated symptoms, diabetes, recent antibiotics, or medicines that affect immunity can make assessment more useful. A clinician may inspect the skin and ask about discharge, pain when passing urine, sexual exposure, and previous episodes.

Rinse gently with lukewarm water, then pat the area dry. Avoid perfumed soap, antiseptic products, vigorous scrubbing, and sex or masturbation while the skin is split or painful. Do not force the foreskin back; if it retracts comfortably, rinse underneath and return it to its usual position.

Use an antifungal only after a pharmacist or clinician has confirmed that yeast is a reasonable explanation, because the wrong cream can worsen some skin conditions. Seek prompt medical care for rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, pus, fever, difficulty passing urine, or a foreskin that is stuck behind the head of the penis. Arrange an appointment for bleeding, sores, repeated cracking, a new sexual exposure, or symptoms that do not improve with gentle care. Persistent inflammation may need a different treatment or evaluation for an underlying skin or health condition.
