Cracked Fingers and Eczema: What to Know

Eczema can make the hands dry, itchy, scaly, and inflamed. Repeated washing, detergents, solvents, cold air, and wet work may strip protective oils and deepen fissures. Cracks may sting when water or products touch them. Atopic dermatitis is one possible cause, but contact dermatitis and other conditions can look similar.

Crusting, increasing warmth, swelling, or drainage deserves attention because damaged skin can become infected. Darker marks may remain after inflammation settles; this is a change in colour, not necessarily ongoing infection.

Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry rather than rubbing. Apply a thick, bland moisturiser immediately after washing and repeat whenever the skin feels tight. Wear protective gloves for cleaning, with cotton liners if sweating becomes a problem, and avoid fragranced products on broken skin. Do not pull off peeling edges. A clinician may recommend an anti-inflammatory treatment when eczema is active.

Get medical advice for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, yellow crusts, fever, or pain that is worsening. Arrange a review when cracks keep reopening, interfere with work, or do not settle after careful barrier protection. Urgent assessment is sensible if a finger becomes markedly swollen or movement is difficult.
