COVID-19 and swollen tonsils

Viral inflammation can make the tonsils look red or enlarged and can cause pain when swallowing. Fever, swollen glands, tiredness, and earache may occur alongside a sore throat. COVID-19 and Tonsillitis can overlap in appearance, so looking at the tonsils alone cannot identify the cause.

Strep Throat is a bacterial infection that may need different treatment. Cough, blocked nose, or loss of taste can point towards a viral illness, while severe one-sided pain, a muffled voice, or difficulty opening the mouth needs prompt assessment.

Sip cool or warm fluids, choose soft foods, and rest. Gargling with warm salty water may soothe the throat for adults who can gargle safely. Follow label directions for suitable pain or fever relief, and avoid sharing cups, utensils, or towels while infectious.

Antibiotic Treatment does not treat viral COVID-19. It may be considered only when a clinician finds evidence of a bacterial infection, so do not use leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have difficulty breathing, develop rapidly increasing neck or throat swelling, or cannot open your mouth normally. Arrange a GP Consultation for persistent fever, worsening throat pain, dehydration, a rash, or symptoms that fail to settle.

Ask whether your tonsils and symptoms fit a viral illness, Tonsillitis, or possible Strep Throat, and whether testing is needed. Tell the clinician about fever, earache, swollen glands, exposure to illness, and your ability to drink.
