Coughing Up Spots of Blood: What to Know

A forceful cough can irritate the lining of the throat and larger airways, producing a few bright-red marks. Blood from the nose, mouth, or gums can also mix with saliva and be mistaken for blood from the lungs. The appearance cannot confirm the source, and a normal-feeling chest does not rule out a problem.

Stay upright, avoid smoking and vaping, and keep a note of each episode, including the amount and whether the blood was mixed with mucus.
