Coughing and Wheezing at Night

Short answer
Coughing and wheezing at night can reflect airway narrowing, nasal drainage, reflux, infection, or another breathing problem.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why symptoms may appear at night
Asthma symptoms may become noticeable overnight and can include chest tightness, cough, and a musical breathing sound. Mucus draining from the nose can irritate the throat, while reflux may worsen after lying down. A recent viral illness can leave the airways sensitive for a while. Chronic conditions such as COPD can also cause nighttime breathing symptoms. The timing, position, triggers, and whether symptoms wake you are useful details; nighttime symptoms do not by themselves identify one diagnosis.
Steps that may help
Keep the room free from smoke, strong fragrances, and other known irritants. Follow a prescribed inhaler plan exactly and keep reliever medicine accessible if your clinician has provided it. Note bedtime, awakenings, cough character, wheeze, nasal symptoms, reflux symptoms, and daytime activity. Arrange a medical review if episodes recur, disturb sleep, or require more reliever medicine than usual. Do not start someone else’s inhaler or antibiotics.
When to seek urgent help
Use emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, inability to speak normally, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, or a tight throat with swelling. Seek same-day care if wheezing persists, sleep is repeatedly interrupted, fever accompanies breathing difficulty, or an inhaler is not helping as expected. A clinician may need to check oxygenation and breathing and consider Asthma, Acute Bronchitis, or another cause. The Wheezing page explains the sound and related symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Could asthma, reflux, nasal drainage, infection, or COPD explain my nighttime pattern? Should my inhaler plan change? What symptoms mean I should seek emergency help? Would breathing tests or an allergy review be useful?

Questions people ask
Why is my cough worse when I sleep?
Lying down can make reflux or nasal drainage more irritating, and airway narrowing may be more noticeable overnight.
Should recurring nighttime wheeze be checked?
Yes. Repeated or sleep-disrupting wheeze warrants a clinical review, even if it settles by morning.
