Cough Worse at Night: What Should You Know?

Short answer
A cough that is worse at night can reflect reflux, nasal drainage, asthma, infection, or irritation when you lie down.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a night-time cough can mean
Lying flat can allow mucus from the nose to move towards the throat, triggering coughing. Acid reflux may also irritate the throat, especially after an evening meal. Wheezing, chest tightness or repeated night waking can occur with asthma. A recent cold or acute bronchitis may leave the airways sensitive after other symptoms begin to settle. Dust, smoke, fragrance and dry air can add irritation in the bedroom.
The symptom alone does not identify one condition. Notice whether it is dry or phlegmy, whether you have heartburn or nasal blockage, and whether exercise or cold air also brings it on.
What you can try
Keep your bedroom free from smoke, strong scents and visible dust. Drink fluids regularly, and consider a warm drink before bed if it soothes your throat. If reflux seems possible, avoid lying down soon after eating and ask a pharmacist or clinician about suitable treatment. Saline nasal care may help when congestion or drainage is present. Do not start, stop or share inhalers without medical advice.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical assessment if the cough persists, keeps disturbing sleep, returns repeatedly, or comes with fever, wheezing, breathlessness, chest pain or blood. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, fainting or rapidly worsening symptoms. Children who are struggling to breathe, unusually sleepy or unable to drink need prompt assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what pattern your symptoms suggest, whether your chest and breathing need examination, and whether testing for asthma, reflux or nasal allergy would help. Mention medicines, smoking or vaping exposure, pets, workplace irritants, and how long the night cough has lasted.

Questions people ask
Can reflux cause a cough at night?
Yes. Reflux can irritate the throat when you are lying down, sometimes without obvious heartburn.
Should a night cough always be treated with antibiotics?
No. Many causes are not bacterial, so treatment depends on the examination and the overall pattern.
