Cough with green phlegm and a hoarse voice

A Common Cold can inflame the nose, throat, and voice box, while mucus colour can change as the immune response clears airway secretions; colour alone does not prove a bacterial infection. Acid Reflux can irritate the voice box and cause hoarseness or cough. Chronic Cough can keep the vocal cords irritated. Less common causes include thyroid or throat problems, particularly when hoarseness persists or comes with a neck lump, swallowing difficulty, or unexplained weight loss.

Drink fluids, rest your voice, and avoid shouting, whispering, smoking, and smoky air. Do not scrape your throat repeatedly; gentle swallowing or a warm drink may be more comfortable. Note fever, breathlessness, the amount of phlegm, and how long the voice change lasts. Arrange a review if symptoms keep returning, interfere with swallowing or breathing, or do not begin to improve.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, noisy breathing, blue lips, confusion, or rapidly increasing throat swelling. Arrange prompt medical assessment for coughing blood, chest pain, severe weakness, or hoarseness with a neck lump or unexplained weight loss. A clinician can decide whether the throat, lungs, or thyroid needs further examination.

Ask whether the pattern fits a cold, reflux, airway irritation, or another cause, and whether your medicines, smoking, or voice use matter. Ask how long to monitor the hoarseness and which swallowing or breathing changes should trigger urgent care.
