Coughing up yellow mucus and blood: what to know

Acute Bronchitis or a Common Cold can make mucus thicker and irritate airway surfaces. Bronchiectasis may present with recurring yellow phlegm and blood. Asthma or Chronic Cough can cause repeated coughing that leaves streaks. Allergic Rhinitis and Acid Reflux can trigger upper-airway irritation, but they are not explanations for every episode.

Pay attention to the whole pattern: how long the cough has been present, whether fever or chills occur, whether mucus smells unusual, and whether breathing is harder than usual. Report chest pain, wheezing, unusual tiredness, recent travel or immobility, smoking, and medicines that affect clotting.

Arrange medical advice if blood is new, the yellow mucus persists, or symptoms are getting worse. Bring a list of medicines and describe the colour, amount, and frequency; a photo may help. Rest and drink fluids if suitable for you, avoid smoke and vaping, and do not start leftover antibiotics because mucus colour alone cannot select treatment.

Get emergency help for increasing or continuous bleeding, severe breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or a rapidly deteriorating condition. Seek same-day assessment for repeated blood-stained yellow mucus, a high fever with significant illness, or bleeding while taking anticoagulant medicine.

Ask whether the mucus pattern fits an airway infection or another problem, whether you need an examination or test, which treatments are appropriate, and which breathing or bleeding changes should prompt emergency care.
