Cough treatment at home
At home, support a mild cough with fluids, rest and trigger avoidance, while watching closely for warning signs. Home care may be reasonable when breathing is comfortable and the person is otherwise alert and hydrated. It should not delay help for a cough with severe breathlessness, chest pressure, blue lips or coughing blood.
When home care may help
A cough after a common cold or acute bronchitis often reflects irritated airways. Allergic rhinitis may cause throat irritation from nasal drainage, while acid reflux can trigger cough after meals or when lying down. Asthma, bronchiectasis, chronic cough and bronchiolitis need medical guidance because symptoms may require specific monitoring or treatment. A change in the usual pattern is more useful than the sound of the cough alone.
Practical home measures
Sip water or a warm drink, rest your voice, and keep the air free from smoke, vaping aerosol, dust and strong fragrances. Raise your upper body slightly if lying down worsens reflux-related coughing. Honey may soothe a cough for some adults and older children, but never give honey to an infant. Use medicines only as directed, and ask a pharmacist before giving cough products to a child or combining them with regular medicines.
When home care is not enough
Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, choking, or chest pressure that does not settle. Seek prompt review for coughing blood, dehydration, a worsening cough, persistent fever, new wheezing, or symptoms in a young infant. Arrange a routine appointment if the cough continues, repeatedly returns or interferes with sleep, work or exercise.
Questions for your doctor
Is home care suitable for my symptoms and medical history? Could reflux, allergy or asthma be contributing? Which over-the-counter products are safe for me or my child? What change should prompt an urgent review?
