Cough suppressant for a dry cough

A dry cough produces little or no mucus and may feel scratchy, tickly or tight. It can follow a viral infection, but allergies, asthma, acid reflux, medicines and airway irritation can also trigger it. A suppressant may dampen the cough reflex; it does not treat these causes or open narrowed airways.

Some products combine a cough ingredient with pain, allergy or decongestant medicines. Taking more than one cold remedy can duplicate ingredients. Drowsiness can affect driving and work, while alcohol may intensify it. Use only as directed on the package and seek advice if the cough changes character.

Sip water or a warm drink, keep the throat moist, and avoid tobacco smoke, strong fragrances and dusty air. Elevating the head during sleep may help if reflux contributes. Seek urgent help for marked breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion or coughing blood. Arrange a medical review for a cough that is worsening, keeps returning, disrupts sleep for a prolonged period, or comes with fever, wheeze or weight loss.
