What should you know about cough mucus with little blood?

Forceful or repeated coughing can irritate small blood vessels in the nose, throat, or airways, leaving a streak in mucus. Blood may also occur with acute bronchitis, bronchiectasis, or another chest problem. A common cold, allergic rhinitis, or acid reflux can irritate nearby tissues, but the source still needs to be considered from the full history.

The colour, amount, frequency, and whether it is mixed through mucus or coming from the mouth or nose are useful details. A small streak does not by itself identify a diagnosis.
