Cough medicine for RSV

Cough medicine does not clear RSV, so relief should focus on fluids, comfort, and monitoring breathing. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before giving any cough or cold product, especially to an infant, child, older adult, or someone with long-term illness.

RSV is a respiratory infection that may cause a runny nose, reduced appetite, fever, and cough. In some people it affects the smaller airways and causes wheezing or faster, harder breathing; this pattern is called bronchiolitis. Symptoms can look like a common cold at first, so the cough alone cannot show how serious the illness is. Infants, older adults, and people with heart or lung disease may need closer observation.

Offer frequent fluids or feeds, keep the nose clear with saline and gentle suction when appropriate, and allow rest. A fever or discomfort medicine may be considered when suitable for the person; follow the product directions and never combine products with the same ingredient. Honey may soothe a cough for children older than infancy and adults, but it must not be given to babies. Antibiotics do not treat a viral infection unless a clinician identifies another infection. Avoid smoke around the person.

Get urgent help if there is severe breathing difficulty, pauses in breathing, blue or grey skin, unusual sleepiness, or inability to drink. For a baby, seek prompt advice for fewer wet nappies, poor feeding, or visible pulling in at the ribs. Arrange medical review if symptoms are worsening, fever persists, or the cough is not settling. A clinician can assess breathing, hydration, and oxygen needs.
