Cough medicine for post-nasal drip

Cough medicine may soothe a cough from post-nasal drip, but treating the nasal drainage usually helps more. A pharmacist or clinician can help match a product to your age, other medicines, pregnancy status, and symptoms.

Mucus from the nose or sinuses can move down the back of the throat. This may cause throat clearing, a tickle, hoarseness, or a cough that is worse when lying down. Allergies, a cold, nasal irritation, and sometimes acid reflux can contribute. A cough with fever, chest tightness, wheezing, or breathlessness may have another cause, such as acute bronchitis or asthma.
