Cough and loss of voice: what to know

The vocal cords sit in the larynx and need to vibrate smoothly. Swelling changes the sound, producing hoarseness, a weak voice, or temporary voice loss. A Common Cold or Acute Bronchitis can trigger coughing and inflammation. Acid Reflux may irritate the voice box, while Allergic Rhinitis can add nasal drainage and throat clearing. Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Bronchiolitis, and Chronic Cough are other respiratory conditions that can cause cough, but voice loss still needs its own assessment.

Consider whether the change followed shouting, singing, smoke exposure, a cold, or reflux symptoms. The presence of a cough does not establish the cause of voice loss.

Speak briefly and gently, and avoid shouting, singing, and whispering while the voice is strained. Drink water, use moist air if helpful, and avoid smoke, vaping, and strong irritants. Replace throat clearing with a sip of water. If reflux seems connected, avoid lying down soon after eating and discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician. Check before using cough remedies if you take regular medicines or have other conditions.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing throat swelling, or sudden voice loss with facial or tongue swelling. Arrange medical review for coughing blood, chest pain, repeated episodes, unexplained weight loss, or voice change that does not improve. Earlier assessment is sensible for smokers, professional voice users, and people with significant lung disease.
