Cough after hand, foot and mouth disease

Hand, foot and mouth disease is caused by a virus. A cough can occur alongside the illness or remain while the throat and airways settle. Mucus dripping from a blocked or runny nose can also trigger repeated throat-clearing. The cough itself does not show that a particular condition is present. A dry cough, a phlegmy cough, and a cough that is worse at night can have different explanations.

If the cough is not easing, returns after improvement, or comes with wheezing, chest pain, fever, or unusual tiredness, another respiratory problem may need checking. Possible explanations include a common cold or acute bronchitis; reflux, allergy, asthma, bronchiolitis, bronchiectasis, or chronic cough may also be considered according to age and symptoms.

Offer regular fluids and allow extra rest. Warm drinks may soothe an irritated throat for an older child or adult. Keep smoke, strong fragrances, and dusty air away from the person coughing. Saline nose drops or spray can help loosen nasal mucus when congestion is adding to the cough. Use medicines only as directed for the person’s age, and do not give a child someone else’s prescription.

Watch breathing, sleep, drinking, and urine output rather than judging recovery by the cough alone. Hand, foot and mouth disease can spread, so wash hands after wiping a nose or handling used tissues and avoid sharing cups or cutlery while the person is unwell.

Arrange prompt medical advice if breathing is fast or difficult, the ribs pull in with breaths, the lips look blue or grey, the person is hard to wake, or a young child cannot drink. Seek same-day advice for a new or persistent fever, dehydration, chest pain, coughing fits, or a clear decline after initial improvement. A cough that keeps returning or is not gradually settling also deserves assessment.

Ask whether the cough fits the recent illness, whether the chest needs examination, and which warning signs matter for this person’s age. Mention when the cough began, whether it is dry or brings up mucus, any wheeze or fever, medicines already tried, and changes in drinking or sleep.
