What should you know about corynebacterium diphtheria?

Some strains produce a toxin that can damage tissues. Infection may create a thick grey or white coating in the throat, with sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, weakness, or difficulty swallowing and breathing. The coating should not be forcibly removed. A person can spread the bacteria through respiratory droplets or close contact, including before the diagnosis is clear. Vaccination greatly reduces the risk, but protection and exposure history still matter. A suspected infection is handled as a medical concern, not as an ordinary sore throat.

Call a healthcare service before attending so staff can prepare for possible infection, and avoid close contact with others while awaiting advice. Do not share cups, utensils, towels, or toothbrushes. Clinicians may take throat or nose samples and prescribe Antibiotic Treatment; close contacts may need assessment and preventive care.
