Cork Hand Therapy

A trained therapist can assess movement, swelling, strength, sensation and the tasks you need to regain. Care may follow injury or surgery, or help manage a joint, tendon or nerve problem.

The first assessment links physical findings to activities such as dressing, typing, cooking, gripping tools or returning to work. Treatment can include education, exercises, swelling and scar management, activity modification, sensory retraining or a custom splint when indicated.

The plan differs according to tissue healing and medical restrictions. After an operation or fracture, the therapist coordinates movement and loading with the surgeon's precautions; advancing too quickly can irritate healing structures.

Bring any referral, imaging report, operation instructions and splint already in use. Note when symptoms began, what makes them worse, which fingers are affected and the daily tasks you cannot complete comfortably.

Between visits, complete only the agreed exercises and wear a splint as directed. Report whether pain, swelling, colour, sensation or hand use changes after the programme so the therapist can adjust it.

Seek prompt assessment after a new injury if the hand looks deformed, a wound is deep, a finger cannot move normally, or numbness develops. Obtain urgent care if a finger becomes pale, blue or cold, or if spreading redness, pus or fever accompanies a wound.

Ask what structure appears to limit function, whether a splint is needed, which movements must be avoided, how progress will be measured and how the home programme fits your work or caregiving tasks.
