Short answer

Dengue fever is managed with fluids, rest, symptom monitoring, and medical guidance, with urgent care needed if warning signs or dehydration develop.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Supportive care
Rest, frequent fluids, and symptom monitoring
Avoid unless approved
Aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers
Urgent warning
Bleeding, severe pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, or breathing difficulty

How dengue fever is managed

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral illness that can cause fever, headache, muscle aches, joint pain, chills, nausea, and marked tiredness. Many people recover with supportive care, but illness can change as the fever settles, so monitoring remains important. A clinician may assess hydration, circulation, symptoms, and blood results when needed.

There is no routine home treatment that removes the virus. Rest, regular fluids, and a clear record of symptoms help the healthcare team judge whether recovery is progressing or closer observation is needed.

Practical care at home

Take frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, rest, and choose light foods as tolerated. Use only fever or pain medicine advised by a clinician or pharmacist, because some medicines can increase bleeding risk during suspected dengue. Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers unless a healthcare professional specifically approves them. Prevent further mosquito bites with screens, long clothing, or repellent so mosquitoes are less likely to spread infection onward.

Arrange a GP Consultation for suspected dengue, recent travel to an affected area, persistent fever, or difficulty maintaining fluids. Keep follow-up appointments even if the temperature improves.

Warning signs requiring urgent care

Seek urgent medical care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, unusual sleepiness, confusion, faintness, breathing difficulty, cold clammy skin, or inability to drink. Easy bruising or worsening weakness also needs prompt assessment. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with significant medical conditions may need earlier review.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether dengue testing or blood monitoring is needed, which fluids and pain medicines are suitable, how often to check symptoms, and which warning signs should send you to emergency care. Tell the clinician about travel, pregnancy, existing conditions, medicines, bleeding, and reduced urination.

Questions people ask

What should I drink with dengue fever?

Take frequent small amounts of water or oral rehydration drink, unless a clinician has given different fluid advice. Seek care if you cannot keep fluids down or urination becomes reduced.

Is it safe to take any painkiller for dengue?

Use only medicine recommended by a clinician or pharmacist. Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers unless specifically approved because bleeding risk may be a concern.
