Contractions After a Membrane Sweep

A membrane sweep separates the membranes near the cervix using a finger during an examination. This can cause cramping, pelvic pressure, increased mucus, or light spotting. Tightenings may settle, remain irregular, or become coordinated contractions. A sweep does not confirm that labour has started, and it does not guarantee that labour will follow.

Use a pad if you have spotting or fluid so you can observe its colour and amount. Rest, drink fluids if appropriate for you, and time contractions from the beginning of one to the beginning of the next. Keep your maternity unit's contact number available. Avoid inserting anything into the vagina if you suspect your waters have broken, and follow the aftercare instructions given at the examination.

Contact your maternity team if contractions become regular, stronger, or difficult to manage, or if you are uncertain whether fluid is leaking. Seek urgent assessment for heavy bleeding, severe pain, fever, green or bad-smelling fluid, reduced baby movements, or a strong urge to push. A clinician may assess your cervix, the baby's wellbeing, and whether labour or another plan is appropriate.

Ask what bleeding is expected after your sweep, how long to monitor cramps, and which contraction pattern should prompt a call. If labour does not begin, ask what the next induction options are and when they would be considered.
