What should you know about contour compression garments?

Short answer
Contour compression garments apply controlled pressure to support healing or swelling management and should be fitted, worn and checked according to your clinical team's instructions.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Purpose
- Controlled pressure can support healing or help manage swelling.
- Fit
- The garment should lie smoothly without rolled edges or painful pressure points.
- Monitoring
- Check the skin and the treated area whenever the garment is removed.
What a contour compression garment does
The garment follows the shape of a body area and provides graduated or targeted pressure. It may be recommended after an operation, during recovery, or as part of swelling care. The pressure can help support tissues and encourage fluid movement, but the garment must match the treated area and your current measurements. A garment that suited you earlier may need reassessment if swelling, weight, wounds or body shape changes.
How to use it safely
Follow the wearing schedule given by your surgeon, nurse, physiotherapist or lymphoedema specialist. Smooth out folds rather than rolling the edge, because a tight band can concentrate pressure. Keep the fabric clean and dry as directed on its care label, and check the skin when removing it. Report persistent rubbing, deep marks or a change in swelling so the fit can be reviewed. Do not place dressings, creams or extra padding beneath it unless your care team has explained how.
When to seek care
Remove the garment and contact your clinical team promptly if it causes increasing pain, numbness, tingling, marked skin colour change, cold fingers or toes, broken skin, blistering, or worsening swelling beyond its edge. Seek urgent medical help for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, or rapidly developing swelling, because these symptoms need assessment rather than adjustment of the garment alone.
Questions for your care team
Ask which pressure level and garment shape were prescribed, how many hours to wear it, whether it should be removed for sleep or bathing, and how often the fit should be checked. Also clarify how to put it on without straining a healing area, what to do if it becomes wet or loose, and whether changes to dressings or skin care affect its use.
Questions people ask
Should a contour compression garment feel tight?
It should feel supportive and evenly firm, but it should not cause pain, numbness, tingling, coldness or a marked colour change. Those signs warrant removal and advice from your clinical team.
Can I change how long I wear the garment?
Check before changing the prescribed schedule. Healing, swelling and skin condition can alter how long the garment is appropriate, so the plan may need an individual review.
When might the garment need replacing or refitting?
Request a fit check if it slips, bunches, becomes stretched, creates pressure points, or no longer matches the shape of the area.
