Continuous pins and needles in the left hand: what to know

Tingling may follow pressure on a nerve in the wrist, elbow, neck, or upper back. It can also occur with nerve damage linked to Type 2 Diabetes, Vitamin B12 Deficiency, or Peripheral Neuropathy. Anxiety or fast breathing during Panic Disorder can bring temporary tingling around the hands and mouth, while Hypothyroidism may contribute to nerve symptoms. The symptom itself does not identify one diagnosis.

Note when the sensation began, whether it affects particular fingers, and whether weakness, pain, neck symptoms, or colour change accompanies it. Avoid leaning on the elbow or keeping the wrist bent for long periods, and protect numb skin from heat and cuts. Arrange a GP assessment if the sensation persists, returns often, or interferes with gripping; an examination can check strength, reflexes, sensation, and possible nerve compression.

Call emergency services immediately if tingling starts suddenly with facial drooping, arm weakness, trouble speaking, confusion, severe dizziness, or loss of balance, because these can occur with Stroke or a Transient Ischaemic Attack. Seek urgent help for rapidly worsening weakness, a cold or blue hand, severe chest pressure, or symptoms after a significant injury.

Ask whether the pattern fits a trapped nerve, whether blood tests could check glucose, thyroid function, and vitamin B12, and whether your medicines, posture, or work activities could be contributing. Mention any history of Type 2 Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, or previous neurological symptoms.
