Short answer

Continuing hiccups often follow diaphragm irritation, reflux, or stomach distension, but persistent or disruptive episodes need clinical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Common triggers
Fast eating, swallowed air, fizzy drinks, and a full stomach
Related symptoms
Heartburn, nausea, fullness, or upper abdominal discomfort

Why hiccups may continue

A hiccup is an involuntary spasm of the diaphragm followed by sudden closure of the voice box. Eating quickly, swallowing air, fizzy drinks, alcohol, temperature changes, stress, or a full stomach can trigger repeated spasms. Acid reflux can irritate the upper digestive tract and diaphragm area, while gastritis may cause upper abdominal discomfort, nausea, or fullness alongside hiccups. Less commonly, medicines or conditions affecting the chest, abdomen, brain, or nerves may be involved, especially when hiccups persist or come with other symptoms.

What you can try

Eat slowly, take smaller mouthfuls, avoid fizzy drinks and personal triggers, and remain upright after meals. Small sips of water may help some people. Do not use frightening or unsafe methods to stop hiccups, and do not start reflux medicine without advice when symptoms are recurrent. Note when episodes begin, what you ate or drank, sleep disruption, and any heartburn, pain, vomiting, or swallowing difficulty.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for hiccups with severe chest or abdominal pain, trouble breathing, fainting, new weakness, confusion, repeated vomiting, or inability to swallow fluids. Arrange medical review when episodes persist, repeatedly disturb sleep or eating, or return without an obvious trigger. A clinician may review medicines, reflux or gastritis symptoms, hydration, and other causes before choosing treatment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether reflux or gastritis could explain the pattern, which triggers to avoid, whether medication is appropriate, and which symptoms should prompt urgent reassessment.

Questions people ask

Can acid reflux cause continuing hiccups?

Yes. Reflux can irritate the upper digestive tract and nearby diaphragm area, so a clinician may consider it when hiccups recur with heartburn.

When do hiccups need medical review?

Seek review when they persist, disrupt sleep or eating, recur without a clear trigger, or occur with pain, vomiting, breathing trouble, or neurological symptoms.
