Short answer

During pregnancy, constipation relief usually starts with regular fluids, fibre-rich foods, gentle movement, and a toilet routine; ask your maternity clinician before using a laxative or supplement.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What constipation can mean during pregnancy

Constipation may involve hard or lumpy stools, straining, fewer bowel movements than usual, or a feeling that the bowel has not emptied. Pregnancy hormones can slow movement through the gut, and the growing uterus may add pressure. Iron supplements can also make stools harder for some people. These changes are common, but persistent symptoms deserve a conversation with your maternity team, especially if you recently started a medicine.

Constipation is different from severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or an inability to pass stool and gas. Those symptoms can signal a problem that needs assessment rather than self-treatment.

Steps that may ease constipation

Drink fluids regularly unless your clinician has advised a fluid restriction. Increase fibre gradually with vegetables, fruit, beans, oats, and wholegrain foods so your gut has time to adjust. Gentle walking or another activity approved for your pregnancy can support bowel movement. When you feel the urge, allow unhurried toilet time; placing your feet on a low stool may make passing stool more comfortable.

Do not stop prescribed iron or other treatment without advice. Your clinician may review the dose, formulation, or timing and can recommend a pregnancy-appropriate stool softener or laxative if lifestyle measures are not enough. Avoid taking herbal products, castor oil, or someone else’s medicine without checking first. Nutrition counselling may help you build a fibre and fluid plan that fits nausea, reflux, diabetes, or other pregnancy needs.

When to seek medical care

Contact your maternity clinician if constipation keeps returning, does not improve with simple measures, or begins after a new medicine. Seek urgent assessment for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen or rigid abdomen, repeated vomiting, blood mixed through the stool, black stool, fever, faintness, or inability to pass stool and gas. Get advice promptly if you cannot keep fluids down or have signs of dehydration such as very dark urine, marked dizziness, or unusual weakness.

Questions for your doctor or midwife

Ask which fibre and fluid changes suit your pregnancy, whether an iron supplement could be contributing, and which bowel medicine is suitable at your stage of pregnancy. Mention how long the problem has lasted, the appearance of your stool, any pain or bleeding, and every medicine or supplement you take. If you have thyroid disease, ask whether your current thyroid treatment or monitoring needs review; do not change the dose yourself.

Questions people ask

Can I take a laxative while pregnant?

Some laxatives may be used during pregnancy, but the suitable choice depends on your symptoms, stage of pregnancy, medicines, and medical history. Ask your maternity clinician or pharmacist before taking one.

Should I stop iron tablets if they cause constipation?

No. Iron is often prescribed for a specific reason. Tell your clinician about constipation so they can consider a different formulation, schedule, or supportive treatment rather than you stopping it alone.

How can I prevent constipation from returning?

Keep fluids regular, add fibre step by step, stay gently active when your pregnancy allows, and respond to the urge to use the toilet. Review recurring symptoms with your maternity team.
