What should you know about constant strep throat?

Strep throat is an infection caused by streptococcal bacteria. A sore throat, painful swallowing, fever and swollen glands in the neck can occur, but symptoms overlap with viral infections. Tonsillitis can also cause enlarged, inflamed tonsils and throat pain. Symptoms that return may reflect a new infection, incomplete recovery, exposure to another person, or a different cause rather than one continuous infection. A clinician may examine the throat and use a swab or other test to guide treatment.

Book a GP Consultation if symptoms are persistent, recur soon after treatment, or make swallowing difficult. Rest, drink fluids, and choose soft foods while the throat is sore. Use only recommended pain relief and follow the instructions for any prescribed medicine. If Antibiotic Treatment is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and do not share leftover doses. Avoid close contact, sharing utensils and preparing food for others while you have fever or feel acutely unwell.

Seek urgent care if you cannot swallow fluids, are drooling, have trouble breathing, develop a muffled voice, or have severe one-sided throat swelling. Prompt assessment is also needed for dehydration, a persistent high fever, a rash, or worsening symptoms after treatment. Emergency help is appropriate for breathing difficulty or rapidly increasing swelling.

Ask whether a throat test is needed, whether the symptoms fit Strep Throat or Tonsillitis, how to use prescribed treatment, and what improvement should look like. Mention previous episodes, recent antibiotics and contact with someone who was ill.
