What should you know about consistent hiccups?

Short answer
Consistent hiccups are repeated diaphragm spasms that may follow irritation, eating, or reflux and deserve assessment when they persist or disrupt eating, sleeping, or breathing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What consistent hiccups can mean
A hiccup happens when the diaphragm contracts suddenly and the vocal cords close briefly. Eating quickly, swallowing air, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes, or emotional stress can trigger short-lived episodes. Ongoing hiccups can also occur with irritation in the upper digestive tract, including acid reflux or gastritis. The symptom alone cannot identify its cause. Notice whether it follows meals, lying down, a new medicine, or another illness, and whether you have heartburn, upper-abdominal discomfort, vomiting, or trouble swallowing.
What you can do now
Take small sips of cool water, eat slowly, and choose smaller meals for a day or two. Avoid fizzy drinks, alcohol, very large meals, and lying down soon after eating. Keep a brief record of timing, triggers, medicines, and associated symptoms. Do not frighten yourself with unsafe tricks or hold your breath for a long time. A clinician can review possible reflux, stomach irritation, medication effects, or less common causes and recommend treatment such as Acid Reflux Medication when appropriate.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical review if hiccups keep returning, continue beyond a brief episode, prevent sleep, or make eating and drinking difficult. Seek urgent help if they occur with severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, fainting, new weakness, repeated vomiting, or inability to swallow fluids. Prompt assessment is also sensible when persistent hiccups appear after a head injury or alongside severe abdominal pain.
Useful questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pattern suggests reflux or stomach irritation, whether any medicine could be contributing, and which symptoms would require urgent care. Bring your trigger record and a list of regular and recently started medicines.

Questions people ask
Can reflux trigger repeated hiccups?
Yes. Irritation from acid reflux can stimulate nerves involved in the hiccup reflex, although repeated hiccups can have other causes.
Should persistent hiccups be checked?
Yes, especially when they disturb sleep, limit food or fluids, recur frequently, or come with other symptoms.
