What should you know about conjunctival melanoma treatment?

The team first confirms the diagnosis and maps the lesion on the eye surface. Pathology helps show the tumour type and whether the edges removed during surgery contain abnormal cells. The location, size, depth, recurrence history and involvement of nearby structures all influence the plan.

Care may involve an ophthalmic surgeon, ocular oncologist, pathologist and medical oncology team. The aim is to control the tumour while protecting as much useful eye function as possible. Treatment choices are individual, so another person’s procedure may not be suitable for you.

Surgery may remove the visible lesion with a margin of surrounding tissue; this is often described as excisional surgery or tumour removal surgery. Additional local treatment may be considered when microscopic cells could remain on the surface. Staging can include assessment of lymph nodes, and systemic treatment such as immunotherapy may be discussed in selected situations.

Before treatment, ask about anaesthesia, eye protection, healing, possible effects on vision and how the specimen will be reviewed. Arrange transport if your vision may be blurred afterward and use prescribed medicines exactly as directed. Follow-up after cancer treatment is part of the plan, not an optional extra.

After treatment, contact the clinic for increasing pain, worsening redness, discharge, bleeding, fever, a new lump or a change in vision. Sudden loss of vision, severe pain or major swelling requires emergency assessment.

Ask what the operation will remove, whether staging is needed, how vision may be affected, which warning signs matter during healing, when pathology will be reviewed, and how recurrence will be checked.
