What should you know about conjunctival melanoma pictures?

Conjunctival melanoma may appear as a brown, black, grey or partly unpigmented patch or lump on the eye surface. It may have uneven colour, visible blood vessels, a raised area or extension toward the eyelid or cornea. Lighting, camera settings and natural eye colour can change how these signs look.

A photograph is useful for documenting change, not for self-diagnosis. A benign mole, a pigment change from another cause and melanoma can resemble one another. The clinician checks the lesion with magnification and compares it with earlier images.

If you notice a new or changing mark, take a clear dated photograph without delaying an appointment. Do not scratch the area, apply skin products to the eye, or rely on online image matching. An ophthalmologist may recommend observation with serial images, biopsy, or removal depending on its features.
