Congestive heart failure symptoms in females

Women with congestive heart failure may notice breathlessness, fatigue, swelling, cough, or reduced ability to manage usual activities. Symptoms can be gradual and may be mistaken for stress, ageing, poor sleep, or a respiratory illness. A symptom pattern and examination matter more than gender alone, and symptoms can differ from one person to another.

Heart failure can make ordinary activity feel unusually demanding. Possible signs include breathlessness when climbing stairs or lying down, waking short of breath, persistent cough, ankle or abdominal swelling, tiredness, reduced appetite, and a racing or irregular heartbeat. Some people mainly notice reduced stamina rather than chest discomfort. High blood pressure and Atrial Fibrillation are conditions clinicians may consider when assessing the heart.

Arrange a medical assessment for new or persistent symptoms, especially if they interfere with sleep, walking, work, or personal care. Keep a brief record of timing, triggers, position, swelling, heart sensations, and recent infections. Bring a full medicine list, including non-prescription products. A clinician may combine an examination with heart, lung, blood, or imaging checks to identify the cause.

Call emergency services for severe breathlessness, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, crushing or persistent chest pressure, or sudden symptoms with sweating and nausea. Seek prompt clinical advice for rapidly increasing swelling, breathlessness at rest, or a sudden fall in exercise ability. Do not wait for a scheduled review when symptoms are escalating.
