Congestive heart failure and blood pressure

Blood pressure is the force of blood against artery walls. Long-standing high blood pressure can strain the heart, while a low reading may occur when the heart cannot pump enough blood or when treatment lowers pressure. One reading does not establish the cause. Clinicians consider repeated measurements, breathlessness, tiredness, swelling, pulse rhythm, kidney function, and an echocardiogram. Atrial fibrillation can also alter the pulse and make automated readings less reliable.

Take prescribed medicines exactly as directed and do not stop them because a home reading changes. Measure at a consistent time after resting, with your arm supported, and record the result with symptoms and medication timing. Bring this record to a chronic disease review. Ask whether salt, fluid, activity, or medicine adjustments apply to your situation; the right advice depends on heart and kidney findings.

Seek emergency care for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, new confusion, or blue-grey lips. Contact a clinician promptly if swelling, fatigue, cough, palpitations, or breathlessness is increasing, or if repeated readings are unusually high or low for you. A blood pressure number cannot safely rule out worsening heart failure.

Ask what blood pressure range is appropriate for you, how often to measure it, and which symptoms should prompt a call. Clarify whether your medicines affect pressure, pulse, or fluid balance, and whether you need an echocardiogram, rhythm assessment, or chronic disease review.
