What should you know about complications of trichomoniasis?

Trichomoniasis is caused by a parasite passed through sexual contact. Some people have no symptoms; others notice unusual vaginal discharge, itching, soreness, burning when passing urine, or discomfort during sex. Ongoing inflammation can make symptoms last and can make it easier to acquire or pass on another sexually transmitted infection.

During pregnancy, infection is associated with concerns such as early labour or a baby being born earlier than expected, so tell your maternity clinician about a positive test or symptoms. Trichomoniasis does not reliably clear without appropriate treatment, and symptoms can return when a partner remains untreated or a new exposure occurs.

Arrange testing with a sexual-health or medical clinician rather than relying on symptoms alone, because discharge and itching have several possible causes. Take the prescribed medicine as directed and avoid sexual contact until treatment is complete and partners have been assessed according to your clinician's advice.

Current and recent partners may need testing and treatment. Return for review if symptoms continue, recur, or change. Use condoms consistently to reduce transmission, and discuss testing for other sexually transmitted infections when appropriate.

Arrange prompt care for pelvic pain, fever, pain during sex, bleeding after sex, pregnancy with new vaginal symptoms, or discharge with a strong change in colour or smell. Seek urgent help for severe pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, or feeling acutely unwell, since these features may point to another condition needing immediate assessment.
