Compex TENS Unit: Safe Use and Expectations

Compex is a product brand, while TENS means transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Programs labelled for muscle stimulation may feel or act differently, so select the mode recommended for your purpose rather than assuming every setting is interchangeable.

TENS commonly produces a comfortable tingling under and between the pads. It may alter pain signalling while the device is running or for a period afterward. A stronger sensation is not necessarily more helpful, and treatment should not cause burning, sharp pain or involuntary movement unless a clinician has prescribed a different stimulation mode.

Response varies with the pain problem, pad position and settings. Reduced pain can support movement or exercise, but new or unexplained pain still needs an appropriate diagnosis.

Read the device instructions and begin with clean, dry, intact skin. Place pads around the painful area as advised, keep them separated, connect them before increasing intensity and turn the unit off before moving them. Inspect the skin after use and replace pads that no longer adhere evenly.

Do not place electrodes across the chest, on the front or sides of the neck, over the eyes, on broken or numb skin, or where stimulation could interfere with safe control of a vehicle. Obtain clinical advice before use if you have an implanted electronic device, a heart-rhythm condition, epilepsy, pregnancy, impaired sensation or uncertain pain.

Stop stimulation if it causes burning, worsening pain, dizziness, palpitations, marked muscle spasm or a persistent skin reaction. Seek emergency help for chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe pain after a major injury; a TENS unit should not delay assessment of these symptoms.

Arrange a clinical review if pain is progressively worsening, repeatedly wakes you, follows an infection or is accompanied by swelling, fever, numbness or loss of strength.

Ask which program is appropriate, exactly where the pads should go, which intensity feels therapeutic and how use fits around exercise or other pain treatment. Confirm whether any implanted device or medical condition changes where or whether you may use electrical stimulation.
