Common Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis commonly presents with tender, swollen and stiff joints, often affecting matching small joints in both hands or feet, alongside fatigue. Stiffness can be more noticeable after waking or sitting still and may ease as the joints loosen. Symptoms may fluctuate, with periods of increased inflammation and periods when they are quieter.

The knuckles, middle finger joints, wrists and joints near the base of the toes are frequent sites of inflammation. Swollen joints may feel soft or warm, and reduced grip can make tasks such as opening a jar or fastening clothing difficult. Rheumatoid arthritis often affects corresponding joints on both sides, but early symptoms do not always follow a neat symmetrical pattern.

Because it is an inflammatory condition, rheumatoid arthritis can also bring low energy, reduced appetite or a general unwell feeling. Joint pain and stiffness alone do not establish the diagnosis; osteoarthritis, infections and other inflammatory conditions can produce overlapping complaints.

Diagnosis may involve examination, blood tests and imaging, interpreted together rather than as isolated results.

Arrange prompt review if several joints become persistently swollen, morning function is progressively restricted, or weakness interferes with routine tasks. Seek urgent care if one joint becomes suddenly hot, severely painful and swollen, particularly with fever, chills or marked illness, as a joint infection must be considered.
