Common Symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis

How the structures involved in Psoriatic Arthritis differ from normal

Short answer

Psoriatic arthritis can cause painful, swollen or stiff joints, along with tendon pain, swollen fingers or toes, nail changes and fatigue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Symptoms at a glance

Psoriatic arthritis can cause painful, swollen or stiff joints, along with tendon pain, swollen fingers or toes, nail changes and fatigue. Symptoms may affect one side differently from the other and can vary over time. Some people notice skin psoriasis before joint problems, while others develop joint symptoms first.

How the symptom pattern can look

Inflammation may make joints stiff after rest and tender during movement. A whole finger or toe can become diffusely swollen, creating a sausage-like appearance. Pain can also occur where tendons or ligaments attach to bone, especially near the heel or sole. Changes such as small nail pits, lifting of the nail or separation from the nail bed can accompany the joint symptoms. Back or buttock stiffness may occur when inflammation affects the spine or pelvic joints.

A flare may bring increased soreness, swelling and tiredness, followed by a quieter period. These features can overlap with other joint disorders, so the pattern and examination matter more than any single symptom.

Useful steps when symptoms appear

Arrange a clinical assessment if joint swelling, morning stiffness or tendon-area pain persists or keeps returning, particularly if you have psoriasis or nail changes. Record which joints are affected, whether swelling involves an entire digit, how symptoms change after rest, and whether skin or nail symptoms flare at the same time. Photos of visible swelling can help when it settles before an appointment.

Gentle movement can reduce stiffness, but scale activity back during a painful flare and avoid repeatedly loading an irritated joint or tendon. A clinician can decide whether examination, blood tests or imaging are appropriate and discuss treatment based on the joints, skin and tendons involved.

When to seek prompt or urgent care

Seek prompt medical care for new persistent joint swelling, worsening function or pain that repeatedly interrupts sleep. Get urgent assessment for a suddenly hot, very painful and swollen joint, especially with fever or feeling acutely unwell, because infection or another acute problem must be excluded. Sudden eye pain, marked redness, light sensitivity or blurred vision also needs urgent evaluation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the distribution of swelling and tendon pain fits psoriatic arthritis, what else could explain it, and which tests would change management. You can also ask how to protect painful joints, what movement is suitable during a flare, and how joint treatment should be coordinated with care for skin and nail psoriasis.

Questions people ask

Can psoriatic arthritis affect an entire finger or toe?

Yes. Psoriatic arthritis may inflame multiple structures in a digit, causing swelling along the whole finger or toe rather than around one joint alone.

Can joint symptoms begin before psoriasis is noticed?

Yes. Some people develop joint symptoms before obvious skin changes, so clinicians also look at the nails, scalp and less visible skin areas and ask about family history.

Does heel pain occur with psoriatic arthritis?

It can. Inflammation where a tendon or ligament joins bone may cause pain behind or beneath the heel, although heel pain has several other possible causes.
