Common Sites of Bone Metastases

They occur when cancer cells from another part of the body settle and grow in bone. This is different from a cancer that started in bone, and the metastatic cells are named and treated according to their original cancer.

The site influences both symptoms and possible complications. A spinal deposit may cause back pain or pressure on nerves. Disease in a weight-bearing bone can weaken it and increase the chance of fracture. Rib involvement may hurt with movement or deep breathing.

Bone metastases may alter normal bone turnover and sometimes raise calcium in the blood, leading to thirst, constipation, drowsiness or confusion. Not every bone lesion is painful, so scans and clinical findings are considered together.

Report new focal pain, pain that wakes you, difficulty walking or a reduced range of movement to the oncology team. Explain whether the discomfort worsens with weight-bearing and whether pain medicine still controls it. The team may arrange imaging or blood tests.

Management depends on the original cancer, the bones involved and the risk of complications. Palliative radiotherapy can target a painful area, bone-strengthening therapy may reduce skeletal problems in suitable patients, and a pain plan can combine medicines with practical support for movement.

Get urgent medical help for sudden severe pain, a limb that cannot support weight, or pain after a minor movement if a bone is known to be weakened. These features can indicate a fracture.

New weakness or numbness in the legs, trouble walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control alongside back pain may indicate spinal cord compression. Marked drowsiness, vomiting or confusion also needs prompt assessment because a high blood calcium level can require treatment.

Ask which bones are affected, whether any are vulnerable to fracture, what activities are safe, and whether physiotherapy or a mobility aid would help. Also clarify how pain will be reviewed, whether a bone-directed treatment suits you, and which symptoms should trigger an immediate call.
