Common cold symptoms in adults

Adults may develop sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, sore throat, hoarseness, headache, mild fever, tiredness, and cough. Body aches can occur, but intense symptoms may fit another infection and deserve attention. A blocked nose can affect sleep and make the mouth or throat dry. The Common Cold is a common explanation for this cluster, yet symptoms alone cannot identify every cause. Earache or facial pressure can develop when congestion affects nearby passages.

Plan lighter activity, rest, and drink enough fluids so your urine is not unusually dark. Saline nasal spray, warm drinks, and throat lozenges can make symptoms easier to tolerate. Follow package directions for paracetamol or ibuprofen, and check whether a multi-symptom product already contains a painkiller. Ask a pharmacist before using a decongestant if you have heart or blood-pressure problems, glaucoma, prostate symptoms, are pregnant, or take regular medicines. Avoid smoking and protect household members by covering coughs and washing hands.

Seek emergency help for severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, fainting, or confusion. Contact a clinician if fever is persistent, you are becoming dehydrated, symptoms are worsening, or a cough is accompanied by breathlessness or chest discomfort. Severe facial pain may need assessment for Sinusitis; significant ear pain may indicate a Middle Ear Infection. A cough that is unusually severe or prolonged should be assessed for other airway problems, including Acute Bronchitis.
