Can a common cold cause loss of appetite?

Short answer
A common cold can reduce appetite because congestion, throat discomfort, tiredness, and altered taste make eating less appealing.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why appetite may change
A blocked nose can reduce the flavour of food, while a sore throat may make swallowing uncomfortable. Feverishness, mucus drainage, poor sleep, and feeling generally unwell can also lower interest in meals. Appetite often returns as the respiratory symptoms improve.
Loss of appetite has many possible causes. Vomiting or diarrhoea may suggest gastroenteritis; upper-abdominal pain can occur with gastritis or a peptic ulcer; persistent low mood can accompany depression. Influenza and COVID-19 can also cause reduced appetite, so the full symptom pattern matters.
Keeping nourished and hydrated
Take frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you are sweating, vomiting, or eating very little. Try small portions of soft foods such as soup, yoghurt, porridge, rice, or toast, and choose foods with protein when tolerated. Do not force a large meal when nausea or throat pain is present.
Monitor urination, alertness, and ability to drink. A pharmacist can advise on symptom relief and whether a medicine is suitable with your health conditions. Avoid alcohol while you are unwell and do not give medicines intended for adults to children.
When to seek care
Seek medical advice if appetite remains low after the cold symptoms improve, weight is falling without trying, or eating is limited by ongoing pain. Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, or breathing difficulty. Babies, older adults, and people with significant medical conditions may become dehydrated sooner.
