What should you know about common cause of cloudy urine?

Urine may look cloudy when it is concentrated, when white blood cells or bacteria are present, or when crystals and other substances collect in it. Dehydration often makes urine darker and stronger-smelling. A urinary tract infection may also cause burning, urgency, frequent passing of urine, lower abdominal discomfort, or an unusual smell. Kidney infection can cause cloudy urine alongside fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or feeling very unwell. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and observe whether the change settles. Arrange a review if cloudy urine persists, keeps returning, or comes with urinary pain or frequency. A clinician may test a urine sample and decide whether treatment is needed. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics, because the correct treatment depends on the cause.

Seek prompt medical care for cloudy urine with fever, side or back pain, vomiting, shaking chills, confusion, or marked weakness, as these can accompany a kidney infection or a more serious illness. Blood in the urine, inability to pass urine, or worsening pain also warrants urgent assessment.
