What should you know about common cause of angina?

When the heart works harder during walking, stress, or cold weather, it needs more oxygen. Narrowed or stiffened coronary arteries may not deliver enough blood, causing pressure, squeezing, heaviness, or tightness in the chest. Discomfort may spread to the arm, shoulder, neck, jaw, or back. Hypertension can strain artery walls and the heart over time, adding to cardiovascular risk. Symptoms can differ between people and may occur during rest when the pattern is unstable.

Arrange a medical assessment for new, repeated, or changing chest discomfort. A clinician may review your pattern, examine you, check risk factors, and arrange tests such as an electrocardiogram. Management can include activity advice, treatment of blood pressure or cholesterol, and medicines chosen for your heart risk and symptoms. Take prescribed medicines as directed and record what brings symptoms on, how long they last, and what relieves them.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or tightness that is severe, new, prolonged, or occurring at rest, particularly with breathlessness, sweating, nausea, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Stop exertion and rest while waiting for help. Do not assume a new episode is ordinary angina simply because an earlier episode settled.
