Short answer

A Columbia compression garment is intended to apply controlled external pressure, and it should be selected and fitted by a clinician trained in lymphoedema care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Clinical purpose
External support can help manage fluid build-up as one part of lymphoedema care.
Fit
Pressure should feel firm and even without numbness, pain, deep creases, or colour change.
Reassessment
A change in swelling, body shape, skin, or garment position warrants a fit review.

The short answer

Compression may help limit fluid build-up and support movement of lymph when used as part of a broader plan. The correct garment type and pressure depend on the affected body area, tissue condition, circulation, hand strength, and changes in swelling.

What controlled compression does

Lymphoedema can develop when lymph drainage is disrupted by cancer, lymph-node surgery, radiotherapy, infection, or another condition. A garment provides graduated support to the limb or body area. Muscle movement against that support can encourage fluid to move towards functioning drainage pathways and may help maintain gains achieved through specialist therapy.

Compression is prescribed, not chosen by appearance alone. Garments differ in construction, stiffness, coverage, and fastening. Some people need a standard size; others need a made-to-measure item because limb shape or swelling distribution requires a closer match.

Using the garment safely

Put the garment on as your lymphoedema clinician demonstrated, smoothing wrinkles rather than pulling tightly at the top edge. Inspect the skin before and after use, keep the material clean according to its care instructions, and use any donning aid recommended for limited grip or movement. Wear it for the schedule prescribed to you.

Arrange a fit review if swelling changes, the garment slides, fabric folds into the skin, or the prescribed support no longer feels even. Elastic materials lose effectiveness with wear, so ask your service when reassessment and replacement should occur rather than relying on appearance alone.

Warning signs while wearing compression

Remove the garment and seek prompt clinical advice if it causes new numbness, pins and needles, increasing pain, unusual coolness, colour change, broken skin, or swelling beyond an edge. These signs may mean the fit is unsuitable or circulation is being affected.

Urgent assessment is needed for sudden limb swelling with chest pain or breathlessness. Also obtain same-day advice for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, tenderness, fever, or feeling acutely unwell, because a skin and soft-tissue infection may need treatment before compression is resumed.

Questions for your lymphoedema clinician

Confirm the garment’s pressure, coverage, daily wear schedule, washing method, and signs that the fit has changed. Ask whether it should be worn during exercise, air travel, sleep, or a flare of skin symptoms, and request a practical demonstration if putting it on or removing it is difficult.

Questions people ask

Can I choose a compression garment size myself?

Clinical measurement is safer because both size and compression level must suit your swelling, tissue, circulation, and body area. An unsuitable fit may worsen symptoms or damage skin.

Should the garment feel tight?

It should feel firm and supportive, but it should not cause pain, numbness, tingling, cool skin, colour change, or a deep band at its edge.

Is a garment the only treatment for lymphoedema?

Usually it forms part of a plan that may include skin care, movement, exercise, self-management education, and specialist lymphatic techniques according to individual need.
