Treatment for colon cancer

Surgery is central for many cancers confined to the colon. Drug treatment may be recommended before or after an operation, or used to control cancer that has spread. Selected areas of disease can sometimes receive additional local treatment.

The team reviews colonoscopy and biopsy findings, scans, surgical options, lymph-node involvement and whether cancer is present in another organ. Pathology from an operation can add details that influence later recommendations.

Molecular testing may identify tumour features that help select certain medicines. Treatment goals also matter: a plan may aim to remove all visible disease, lower the chance of return, shrink cancer before a procedure, slow growth or relieve symptoms.

Keep copies of imaging, pathology and colonoscopy reports, and bring a complete medicine list to appointments. Tell the team about neuropathy, bowel problems, kidney or liver conditions, heart disease, fertility concerns and practical barriers to attending care.

Before starting, clarify the goal, sequence, expected side effects, monitoring and alternatives. Ask for written instructions covering nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, mouth soreness, wound or stoma care, food and fluid intake, and the contact route for problems between visits.

Use the urgent number supplied by your oncology team for fever, shaking chills, repeated vomiting, uncontrolled diarrhoea, inability to drink, rapidly worsening pain, unusual bleeding, new confusion or a sudden decline in strength.

Emergency help is needed for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, collapse, signs of a serious allergic reaction, heavy bleeding or sudden severe abdominal pain. Do not wait for the next scheduled appointment when these symptoms occur.

Ask what the treatment is intended to achieve, why the proposed sequence fits your cancer, whether tumour profiling changes the options and how the team will judge response.

Discuss effects on work, diet, bowel function, fertility and existing conditions, along with dose changes or supportive treatments available if side effects become difficult.
