Colon cancer that has spread to the liver

The plan depends on where the liver deposits are, whether cancer is present elsewhere, the tumour's biological features, liver function, general health and which treatments have already been used.

Cancer cells can travel from the colon through blood vessels that drain toward the liver. A deposit in the liver remains colon cancer rather than becoming a new liver cancer.

Assessment may include scans of the chest, abdomen and pelvis, blood tests, review of the original tumour and sometimes molecular testing. A specialist team uses this information to decide whether deposits can be removed or treated locally and whether medicine should come before or after a procedure.

Arrange review by a team experienced in both colorectal cancer and liver disease. Bring scan reports, images, pathology results, medication lists and details of previous operations or drug treatment.

Options can include systemic medicines, liver resection, other liver-directed procedures, radiotherapy, surgery on the bowel, or symptom-focused care. These approaches may be combined or sequenced, and a finding that is not removable at first assessment can sometimes be reassessed after treatment.

Contact your care team promptly for new yellowing of the eyes or skin, increasing abdominal swelling, persistent vomiting, worsening pain, fever, confusion, marked weakness or an inability to keep fluids down.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, heavy bleeding, sudden severe abdominal pain or rapidly worsening confusion. Urgency is based on the symptom and your condition, not on how commonly liver spread causes it.

Ask whether disease is confined to the liver, whether the scans have been reviewed by a liver surgeon, what the goal of treatment is, whether tumour profiling could guide medicines, and how the team will check response.
