Cold nausea: what to know

Short answer
Feeling cold and nauseated can have several causes, so assess hydration, temperature, pain, and other symptoms rather than assuming one diagnosis.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Hydration
- Take small frequent sips if you can keep fluids down.
- Record
- Track pain, temperature, vomiting, bowel changes, urine, and triggers.
What it may mean
Nausea with chills or a cold sensation can occur during a viral illness, stomach infection, or food poisoning. Gastroenteritis often brings vomiting or diarrhoea. Gastritis or acid reflux may cause upper-abdominal discomfort, burning, or an unpleasant taste. Gallstones can cause strong pain in the upper right abdomen, sometimes after a fatty meal. Heat exhaustion can cause nausea with weakness, sweating, dizziness, and feeling unwell. In someone using diabetes treatment, hypoglycaemia may cause sweating, shaking, hunger, or confusion.
The timing and associated symptoms matter. Note whether nausea follows food, comes with fever or diarrhoea, occurs after heat exposure, or improves after a suitable snack and fluids.
What to do now
Rest somewhere comfortable and take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration drink if you can keep fluids down. When appetite returns, choose small bland meals and avoid alcohol, heavy meals, and foods that clearly trigger symptoms. Move to a cool place after heat exposure and loosen tight clothing. If diabetes is part of your care plan, follow your clinician's instructions for checking glucose and treating a low reading.
Avoid taking anti-sickness or pain medicine borrowed from someone else. A pharmacist can check whether a medicine is suitable with your conditions and regular treatment. Keep a record of vomiting, bowel changes, pain, temperature, urine, and what you have managed to drink.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, chest pain, fainting, confusion, stiff neck, blood in vomit or stool, black stool, or difficulty breathing. Get prompt medical advice if you cannot keep fluids down, urinate much less than usual, become very weak, or have persistent fever. After heat exposure, urgent assessment is needed for confusion, collapse, or worsening despite cooling and fluids.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern fits infection, reflux, gastritis, gallstones, heat exhaustion, or low blood sugar; how to replace fluids; and which symptoms should trigger same-day review.

Questions people ask
Can nausea make you feel cold?
Yes. Nausea, chills, sweating, dehydration, or a developing illness can create a cold sensation, so accompanying symptoms are useful clues.
When is cold nausea urgent?
Seek urgent help for severe abdominal pain, confusion, fainting, blood, breathing difficulty, or inability to keep fluids down.
