Tests for cold intolerance

Short answer
There is no single test for cold intolerance; a clinician usually starts with your symptom history and examination, then chooses blood tests for causes such as anaemia, low iron or thyroid disease.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key point
- History and examination determine which tests are useful.
- Common checks
- Blood count, iron-related tests and thyroid tests may be considered.
How investigation works
The appointment usually begins with questions about when you feel cold, which areas are affected, how long episodes last and whether warmth returns normally. The clinician may ask about tiredness, breathlessness, skin or bowel changes, periods or other bleeding, diet, medicines and family history. Examination may include skin colour, pulse, temperature, neck, heart and circulation.
Blood tests may include a full blood count to look for Anaemia, iron-related tests for Iron Deficiency Anaemia, and thyroid tests when Hypothyroidism is possible. The exact tests depend on your symptoms and examination. Further assessment may be needed if one limb is affected or circulation seems abnormal.
Preparing for a test visit
Bring a list of medicines and supplements, details of recent illness, and a short symptom diary. Include episodes of numbness, colour change, dizziness, fatigue, heavy bleeding or breathlessness. Ask whether you need any preparation for the blood draw. Do not begin iron or thyroid treatment before testing unless a clinician has advised it, because treatment can alter results or be unsuitable for the actual cause.
While waiting, use layers and moderate warmth. Protect numb skin from direct heaters and very hot water, and seek advice if symptoms are progressing.
When testing should not wait
Seek urgent care for coldness with fainting, confusion, severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue or very pale skin, sudden weakness, or a limb that becomes suddenly cold, painful or numb. Arrange an appointment for persistent or worsening symptoms, reduced exercise tolerance, unexplained bleeding, or symptoms that disturb sleep or daily tasks. Testing is most useful when interpreted alongside the clinical history.
Questions about testing
Ask: Which causes are you checking? What will the blood tests measure? Do I need to avoid food or medicines beforehand? When and how will results be explained? If thyroid treatment is considered, what monitoring would follow? Ask what symptoms should prompt urgent review while you wait.

Questions people ask
Is there a specific cold intolerance test?
No single test diagnoses it. Assessment combines your symptom history, examination and targeted tests.
Can a blood test find the cause?
Blood tests can help identify anaemia, low iron or thyroid problems, while other causes may need different assessment.
