Cold hands and nausea

Nausea may occur with gastroenteritis, food poisoning, gastritis, acid reflux, or gallstones. Heat exhaustion can cause nausea with weakness, sweating, thirst, and cool or clammy skin. Low blood sugar may bring shaking, sweating, hunger, confusion, or unusual tiredness. Anxiety can also activate the body’s alarm response, narrowing skin blood vessels and upsetting the stomach. The combination does not point to one cause without timing and associated symptoms.

Rest in a cool, safe place and take small, frequent sips of fluid if you can keep them down. Choose bland food when ready and avoid alcohol or heavy meals while nausea continues. If you use glucose-lowering medicine, follow your personal plan for suspected low blood sugar and seek advice if symptoms do not improve. Note vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, pain, heat exposure, meals, and new medicines.

Seek urgent help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blood in vomit or stool, a stiff neck, or inability to keep fluids down. Prompt assessment is needed for very little urine, severe weakness, signs of heat illness, or cold clammy skin with collapse. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with long-term conditions may need earlier advice.

Ask which causes fit the timing of your symptoms, whether dehydration or low blood sugar needs checking, and which fluids or medicines are suitable for you. Mention recent travel, shared meals, heat exposure, pregnancy possibility, and any ongoing abdominal pain.
